This postwar pavilion style house was our own residence when the first renovations were done. After we added a new swimming pool we replaced the old asbestos-cement roof with a low slung corrugated iron curved roof covering large outdoor decks on the steep site. 10 years later I also designed the downstairs granny flat extensions for the new owner.

Indooropilly multi-residential

This block of 10 apartments is located in the growing urban hub of Indooroopilly in Brisbane.  Many difficult planning issues had to be resolved in the design including incorporating an overland flow-path, preventing basement inundation, refuse collection for the narrow site, and maintaining an existing shared sewer line running through the property.

Pelican Park tourist information centre

This tourist information hub in Clontarf for the Redcliffe City Council replaced an old temporary kiosk on the site of a park popular with the large flocks of pelicans in the area.

Camp Hill house renovations, new kitchen

This renovation was precipitated by the need for a new kitchen. In the process the cramped living area and other spaces were rationalised for better flow and a more open plan, by moving and removing walls.

Pavilion of Hope, EXPO 2000

This pavilion was designed in collaboration with Thomson Adsett Architects and Buchalla & Partners for the construction phase. Backed by three Christian non-profit organisations, it brought a message of hope to young people, facilitating personal change and engagement with care projects around the world.
After visitors to EXPO 2000 voted it the most popular pavilion it was designated the expo's Landmark pavilion. It remains in place today, used as a convention centre. Go to http://tinyurl.com/ybrnlv4a  for more information.

A recently built house on a steep site had an ugly unexcavated portion at one end that was highly visible to the street.  This made it look unfinished. In addition to this, the adjacent site area was totally undeveloped and extremely steep, making it unusable. The brief was to excavate and fill in the undercroft gap with a gym and home theatrette, and to tidy up the difficult garden.

This design involves raising an existing house to add a storey as well as adding a granny flat pod in the backyard, lap pool, carport, and big decks for entertaining, capturing the stunning views of the border ranges.

Howrah lounge extension

The owners previously had a small glass conservatory added to their kitchen/living room to replace the main window in that area. This atrium was supported by 2 very slender and flimsy-looking columns. It felt more like a glassed in balcony, as well as adding to the heating and cooling loads. The living room still felt cramped and unfinished, so they decided to demolish the atrium and instead extend the whole living area, virtually doubling it in size.

Mt Stuart garage conversion

The owner had a typical 6m x 6m steel garage in their backyard and wanted to convert this into separate living quarters on a very limited budget.
This was lined and insulated to form the living/dining/kitchen area. An extension was added for the bedroom and bathroom, as well as a small laundry in the connecting space.

Rosny guest unit

This ground floor space was already an uninsulated drafty guest room. It needed a full renovation with double glazing, insulation, new bathroom, and a kitchenette.
In this process the main house entry and stair access was reconfigured to give the guest unit more floor area.

RIawena kitchen renovation

The old kitchen in this 1960s home was severly dysfynctional. Its geometry was disrupted by a bay window on one long side and 2 doors at opposing corners, so 3 small disconnected workspaces had been awkwardly placed in the only available spaces. 
A complete renovation with major changes to all kitchen walls and openings was needed to resolve interconnections for practical flow and an improved workspace in a simple galley configuration. A breakfast bar was also added where the new kitchen was opened up to adjacent dining area.

Hamilton home extensions

The owners needed to extend and upgrade their home, a worker's cottage on a narrow block in a good area.  A backyard pod extension was the obvious solution. The sloping block allowed this to also provide under-cover car accommodation.
The project was staged so the owners could live on site throughout the construction process, moving into the rear extension while renovations of the cottage are carried out.

Montagu Bay home alterations

The owner of this small 96m² 2-bedroom split-level cottage had problems with the old dysfunctional plan as well as heating and cooling. She also needed a larger deck and better car accommodation. 15% of the floor area was also lost to circulation space so it all felt cramped. Simply adding a small (6m²) extension and reorganising the spaces allowed us to turn this into a 3-bedroom home with a large open plan living/dining/kitchen area and high skylit raked ceiling. In this process the walls and roof were insulated and widows replaced with double-glazing to bring it up to current energy efficient standards. The small deck was extended for better entertaining and a carport was also incorporated in the entry design. 

Moonah house deck

The owner has a large garden but were disconnected from this at their upper floor main living areas. They wanted to add a large deck to facilitate outdoor living and entertaining, as well as providing improved connection with their backyard.
